As a sales professional and businessman here in the Silicon Valley, I was immediately impressed with the way that The Academy of Self Defense chooses to do business. In an industry full of "initiation fees" and long-term contracts, ASD has separated themselves from the masses.
When I first visited ASD I was offered a 2-week free trial membership to help me determine if ASD was the right school for me. I was amazed that the ASD staff was more concerned about my comfort with the school than they were with "hooking" me into some long-term arrangement. When our discussion did come around to membership/payment options, I was thrilled with the flexibility and choices ASD offered. This level of professionalism is something that I have never seen in any school, gym or club!
The reality is that I did not take ASD up on the 2-week free trial. I became a member that very day. I had been referred to ASD by a friend who is a police sergeant and after visiting with Ev Pepper (ASD's Director of Instruction) I realized that not only does Ev have tremendous knowledge to share, but he has the ability to share it in a way that resonates with his students. I have been a member of ASD now for almost 4 years and cannot say enough about the quality of my experience from both a business and instructional standpoint.
While ASD offers many programs, my experience has been primarily with Krav Maga. At ASD, I have learned a very appropriate and easily deployable set of principles. ASD does not teach what I refer to as “if – then” techniques where the student is told “if the opponent does X…then you do Y.” The limitation in that style of instruction is that it is impossible to teach every “if – then” scenario that one might face. Instead, ASD teaches principles that can be used whenever appropriate and which are not contingent on the opponent's actions for their use and effectiveness. In my opinion, this is what makes the training that ASD provides so valuable.
If you are looking for a school that employs ethical business practices, provides high-quality instruction, is a tremendous value for your dollar and comes recommended by police officers as a clean/safe place to train, then I feel that the Academy of Self Defense is the place for you!
